Australian Time Zones

Australia uses three main time zones. Uniquely, some states observe daylight saving time while neighbouring states do not, making inter-state scheduling complex.

The Three Australian Time Zones

AEST

Australian Eastern Standard Time

UTC+10

Queensland, NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, ACT

DST: AEDT (UTC+11) in summer

NSW, VIC, TAS, ACT observe AEDT (UTC+11) in summer. Queensland does NOT observe DST.

ACST

Australian Central Standard Time

UTC+9:30

South Australia, Northern Territory

DST: ACDT (UTC+10:30) in summer

South Australia observes ACDT (UTC+10:30) in summer. The Northern Territory does NOT observe DST.

AWST

Australian Western Standard Time

UTC+8

Western Australia

No DST

Western Australia does not observe DST.

Daylight Saving Time in Australia

DST runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April (Southern Hemisphere summer). Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory do NOT observe DST — they stay on standard time year-round. This creates a shifting time difference between, for example, Sydney and Brisbane during summer.
